The Loss of a Child
The loss of a child is something that we do not think about, it lurks in the corners of our minds and when we hear about it, we think how awful as it reminds us it could happen to us, but we never think it will. When Cara died my world came crashing down, time stood still to me but the weird, weird thing about devastating loss is that life goes on. When you are faced with tragedy, a loss so huge you that you have no idea how you can live through it, somehow the world keeps turning and the seconds keep ticking.
The grief I experienced was indescribable, it crashed over me in waves taking my breath away and dragging me under, I felt like I was going to drown. At some points I thought I would not survive it and at others I did not want to, driving off the side of the motorway felt like a good idea at one point to stop the pain. I understand now that I have survived it, but I know I will never get over it.The loneliness I experienced over the years of grieving and loss was tremendous, you are left to get on with it and people expect you to get over it and get on with your life. It would have been wonderful to talk to other parents and gain some support from someone who had gone through the same thing.
I feel we need to come together in our loss and talk about what has happened and what we are feeling. Coming together with others who have experienced something similar is a great way of getting mutual support and understanding at whatever stage of the grieving process you are in. Whether at the beginning or thirty years on, we need to remember, talk about how we are feeling together, spiritually connect with others and ourselves. If you have lost a child, my heart goes out to you. If you would like to connect with me, this is what is on offer, please register your interest below. If you know someone who has lost a child, please pass on this information.
